Teenage Years
author: Mayra Perez
category: Growing Up
Jealousy, acceptance, responsibility, family, education,
Freedom, priorities, friends, true love, and socialization,
Are but a few words that describe the life of a teenager.
Through thick and thin, happy and sad, they persevere.
Many see them smiling at the world because happiness is near,
Or screaming an agonized “Why me?” to the heavens above,
Desperately trying to their problems out of their lives shove.
They’re in the happiest yet most difficult time they will ever live.
Each teenage year, something special and unique to the person it will give.
The gift of experiencing freedom is given by the year thirteen.
Teenagers are allowed the freedom that they had never seen.
It might not be much, but the excitement has begun,
And the delight of being freer they cannot shun.
The year fourteen gives them an outlook on true love and affection,
Although many who have lived through this would rather call it infatuation.
Along with this comes excessive drama and continuous fights,
So much, it’ll keep you awake and through many, many nights.
Fifteen gives young girls the opportunity to become young women,
They are now on their way to adulthood, “But when?
When?” they wonder, “Will I have a family, and a job, and a house?”
They are no longer little girls, and begin to think about their future spouse.
Responsibility and priorities is what comes with the age sixteen.
They must be very responsible in order to be a good sixteen-year-old teen.
They learn to sort their priorities. “Go party? Do my homework?
I’d rather miss out on this one than be called a big dork.”
Seventeen brings many parties, dates, and overall socialization.
It’s a year of happiness and good memories instead of indignation.
They don’t hesitate because their teenage years are almost finished;
All traces of freedom restrictions have now diminished.
As teen’s graduate high school, the year eighteen gets them an education.
Accomplishing thirteen years of school is a very proud and happy sensation.
They also learn to accept people, their mistakes, and the world around them.
They are fully aware of wars though they’d rather see the things that are like a gem.
And when nineteen approaches, nothing seems to come more than true maturity.
The only thing teen about them are the last four letter of their age, which are itty bitty.
They are no longer little, but are now working for a college education, and now see,
How the rose has bloomed into a magnificent thing that sees the world in its entirety.
